What size pendant lights should you hang over a kitchen island?

Pick pendants whose diameter is one-half to two-thirds of the island's width and never wider than that width minus 12 inches, hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, and space them about 30 inches center to center with at least 6 inches kept in from each end. A 5- to 6-foot island takes two pendants; longer islands take three, or one linear fixture. Rowabi's Elizabeth Dome at $225.25 and Starry Rattan Pendant at $360.00 (checked October 2026) fit that math on most islands.

The sizing rules below are quoted from Rowabi's kitchen island pendant guide, City Lights SF's arrangement guide and Porch Daydreamer's sizing guide, and every fixture figure comes from the maker's or seller's own product page, rather than first-hand use.

The four measurements, in the order to take them

1. Height above the counter

Rowabi's guide sets the baseline: "The general guideline is to hang the bottom of the pendant light 30 to 36 inches (76-91 cm) above the kitchen island countertop." Which end of that band you choose depends on who uses the island. Rowabi says to "Aim for the higher end (34–36 inches) if the users are tall or if an unobstructed view across the island is essential", and to keep the light "slightly lower (around 30-32 inches) for optimal task lighting for activities like chopping". Ceiling height then nudges the number: for ceilings over 8 feet, Rowabi suggests "adding about 3 inches of height for every extra foot of ceiling clearance", and City Lights SF puts the same idea in bands, recommending pendants "closer to 30 inches above the countertop" under 9-foot ceilings and "36 inches or more" when ceilings reach 10 feet. Measure from the countertop to the ceiling first, because the number you are shopping for is the cord length that lands the shade in that window.

2. Diameter

Two rules, and the stricter one wins. Rowabi's proportional rule is "a pendant diameter of approximately 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the island", and its hard ceiling is to "Determine the island's width and subtract 12 inches (30 cm) to find the recommended maximum diameter of the pendant lights." City Lights SF adds a floor for small islands: "Pendants with 12 inches or less diameter are ideal for smaller or medium-sized kitchen islands." Porch Daydreamer's worked example is the one most people need: "If you have a 5ft or 60 inch long island, and ideal pendant would be no larger than a 15 inch diameter or square pendant." The same writer later sized up to 24 inch diameter pendants over an 8 ft island, which shows how far the right answer moves with the slab.

3. Spacing and end clearance

Rowabi's guide: "Pendants should be placed approximately 30 inches (75-80 cm) apart, measured from center-to-center", and "Position pendant lights at least 6 inches (15 cm) from the island's edge". City Lights SF gives a slightly wider band, "24–30 inches apart, measured from the center of one fixture to the next", with the same 6 inches of edge clearance. Porch Daydreamer is more conservative at the ends: "Hang the pendant about 8 to 12 inches in from each end of the island, so they don't hang too close to the end." Work from the ends inward, not from the middle outward, and the gaps between fixtures will look deliberate.

4. How many

Rowabi's guide uses the "rule of three" as the default, with the caveat that "smaller islands (5 - 6 feet) may require only two pendant lights", and notes that "Larger islands may require a single large pendant or multiple clusters." For rectangular or elongated islands it points to linear fixtures, which "offer uniform lighting when arranged linearly". An odd count reads as intentional; two pendants read as intentional only when the island is short enough that three would crowd.

Fixtures that fit the math

Rowabi Elizabeth Dome Pendant Light

Rowabi lists the Elizabeth Dome at $225.25 against a $265.00 regular price (checked October 2026), in two sizes: a 14-inch body and an 18-inch body with a shade Rowabi measures at 18-inch diameter and 9-inch height. It is a metal dome with a glossy white shade and a warm brass interior, built "for a focused, downward task light", and Rowabi describes it as "perfectly suited for installation as a kitchen pendant light above islands." Two 14-inch domes suit a 5- to 6-foot island; three 18-inch domes suit an 8-foot one. The suspension is 60 inches, so check it against a tall ceiling before ordering. Check the price at Rowabi

Rowabi Starry Rattan Pendant Light

The Starry is the statement option at $360.00: a 20-inch-wide, 19-inch-tall organic rattan shade on a 120-inch suspension, weighing 10 lb. Rowabi recommends "a 60W-equivalent LED bulb to ensure the organic fibers stay cool" and describes the output as "a highly textured, low-glare light." Under the minus-12-inch rule a 20-inch shade wants a wide island, and under the proportional rule two of them look right only when the island is substantial; on a narrow slab, use one. Rowabi Serene 3-Light Pendant Light

For a single-fixture answer, Rowabi's Serene 3-Light is "a balanced trio of premium glass shades suspended from a sleek linear frame", 37 inches across and 6 inches tall on a 120-inch suspension, weighing 15 lb, listed at $476.00 against a $560.00 regular price. Rowabi suggests hanging it "above dining tables, kitchen islands, or living room focal points." It gives you the odd count on one canopy, which is the simplest fix for a kitchen wired for one junction box.

Decorbites Wood Linear Pendant Light, 80cm to 120cm

If your island is long and narrow, the linear route is Decorbites' Wood Linear Pendant Light, sold in 80cm, 100CM and 120cm lengths in wood or walnut and listed at $498 against a $996 regular price (checked October 2026). Decorbites calls it an "elongated wooden pendant light" with "High-quality LED for efficient lighting" and offers free shipping and 30-day returns. Center it over the island and apply the same 30 to 36 inches to the counter. Check the price at Decorbites

Decorbites White Glass Globe Pendant Light, 15cm or 20cm

For the City Lights SF small-island case, a row of small globes does the job: Decorbites' White Glass Globe Pendant comes in 15cm and 20cm sizes at $122 against a $244 regular price, with a "Glass globe for soft, even light" that is "Compatible with LED bulbs". Three of the smaller globes over a short island keep the odd count without the visual weight. Check the price at Decorbites

Mistakes that make an island look wrong

  • Shades too small. The common failure is choosing from a photo rather than the slab. Measure the width, subtract 12 inches, and treat the result as the ceiling for each shade.
  • Hung too high under a high ceiling. The 30 to 36 inch rule is measured from the counter, not the floor; City Lights SF notes that pendants hung too high read as "disconnected" from the island.
  • Crowding the ends. Keep Rowabi's 6 inches, or Porch Daydreamer's 8 to 12 inches, in from each end.
  • Even counts on long islands. Two pendants over an 8-foot island leave a dark middle; three medium shades or one linear fixture solve it.
  • Ignoring the rest of the room. Pendants are task-and-accent lighting, not the whole plan; our three-layer lighting method explains how they sit with ambient light, and the reading nook lighting guide shows the same height logic applied to a chair. In a small open kitchen, our small apartment layout guide covers the clearances around the island itself. For everything else we rate, see our full shortlist.

Article FAQ

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

Bottom of the shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, per Rowabi's and City Lights SF's guides. Go toward 36 inches for tall users or a clear sightline, toward 30 inches for task light, and add about 3 inches for every foot of ceiling over 8 feet.

How far apart should two pendants be over an island?

About 30 inches center to center by Rowabi's guide, or anywhere in City Lights SF's 24–30 inch band, with at least 6 inches between the outer shade and the end of the island. Porch Daydreamer sets her own pendants just over 24 inches apart and 12 inches in from the ends.

How many pendants for a 6-foot island?

Two. Rowabi's guide says islands of 5 - 6 feet "may require only two pendant lights"; the rule of three starts to pay off on longer slabs.

Can I use one linear light instead of several pendants?

Yes, and for a rectangular or elongated island Rowabi's guide calls linear fixtures ideal because they light evenly along the length. Decorbites' wood linear pendant comes in 80cm to 120cm lengths for exactly this case.

What bulb goes in a rattan pendant?

Rowabi specifies a 60W-equivalent LED for the Starry so the fibers stay cool. Use the maker's stated maximum for any woven or fabric shade, and choose the same color temperature for every pendant over the island so the row reads as one light.
