Foundation

A foundation is a rigid base — a wood or metal frame with closely spaced slats or a solid top, usually fabric-wrapped — that sits under a mattress on a traditional frame. Unlike an old-style box spring, it does not flex. Foam and hybrid mattresses generally want a foundation or platform, not a springy box; some innerspring warranties still require a true box spring.
